  13. <p>   [Text] Monrovia, April 20 (AFP)--The field commander of
  14. the multi-nation West African peace-keeping force, ECOMOG,
  15. [Economic Community of West African States Cease-Fire Monitoring
  16. Group], Major-General Ishaya Bakut, Monday [20 April] said the
  17. troops will "shortly" create a buffer zone with Sierra Leone and
  18. deploy throughout Liberia.

  20. <p>   Bakut said the leaders of ECOMOG, in agreement with Liberia
  21. leaders, have mandated ECOMOG to deploy its troops throughout
  22. Liberia and disarm all fighting factions to establish an
  23. atmosphere for free and fair elections in the country.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>   "The successful completion of this task will provide the
  26. necessary and required condition in which Liberians can conduct
  27. political activities without pressure, molestation or
  28. intimidation of whatever nature", Bakut said in a nationwide
  29. radio broadcast.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>   He said "a happy, free and fair political environment is
  32. achievable only when the fighters of the warring factions in
  33. Liberia have been disarmed and the arms collected and put away".
  34. </p>
  35. <p>   "This is our major task, which we will undertake shortly for
  36. the good of all Liberians", Bakut said.
  37. </p>
  38. <p>   He solicited the support and cooperation of all Liberians,
  39. and assured them that ECOMOG's duties would "not interfere" with
  40. the administration of Liberia.
  41. </p>
  42. <p>   Bakut said ECOMOG soldiers will continue to maintain a "very
  43. cordial, friendly and happy" relationship with the people,
  44. village heads and elders.
  45. </p>
  46. <p>   He said ECOMOG troops will control security at the border
  47. areas while Liberians carry out customs and immigration checks.
